What is Polygon?

Polygon (formerly known as the Matic Network) launched in October 2017. It was co-founded by Jaynti Kanani, Sandeep Nailwal and Anurag Arjun, the former experienced blockchain developers and the latter a business consultant.

Before creating its network in 2019, the Polygon team was a sizeable contributor to the Ethereum space. The team is credited with implementing the Plasma MVP, the WalletConnect protocol and the Dagger event notification engine on Ethereum.

In its current form, Polygon is the first well-structured, easy-to-use platform for Ethereum scaling and infrastructure development. The core component is Polygon SDK, a modular framework that supports the building of multiple types of applications.

Polygon shares some characteristics with other multi-chain systems like Avalanche and Polkadot, but with the advantages of Ethereum’s security, vibrant ecosystem and transparency.

Polygon can handle up to 65,000 transactions per second on a single side chain and a block confirmation time of under two seconds. The framework permits the creation of globally available decentralized financial applications on a single foundational blockchain.

MATIC are the native tokens of Polygon. It is an ERC-20 token running on the Ethereum blockchain. These tokens are used for payment services on Polygon and as the settlement currency between users on the Polygon ecosystem. The transaction fees on Polygon sidechains are paid in MATIC tokens.

How much is a MATIC?

As of late July 2022, a MATIC token was trading for around $0.70 with a market cap of approximately $5.95 billion.

It has been as high as $2.80, but like most coins, it was affected by the significant fall in the crypto market in mid-2022.

There is a max supply of MATIC of 10,000,000,000 with 80% in circulation.

Low transaction fees

The gas fee of the Polygon Matic network usually moves from $0.0005 to $0.2 – effectively free. This makes it a solid alternative to Bitcoin casinos or Ethereum casinos, where the gas fees are much higher.

If you make regular deposits and withdrawals at casinos, you don’t want to consistently pay high gas fees as it will eat into your profits.

Extremely fast transactions

The Polygon PoS offers a transaction speed of about 72000 tx/sec, which compares highly favourably to Ethereum’s 15 tx/sec, with around 10000X lower transaction fees.

While deposits and withdrawals at crypto casinos are always marketed as instant, if your transaction is stuck because the network is busy, it will not be instant. Polygon is one of the fastest coins around, so it’s a great coin to use at crypto casinos.

Great for decentralized casinos and Dapps

While we don’t recommend many dapps currently, we expect the space to mature in the next year or so, and there could be some extraordinary developments regarding casinos. Polygon could be at the heart of this. The chain has all the benefits of Ethereum but without the disadvantages. More and more developers are moving to the Polygon network to escape high Ethereum fees, and as the coin grows in popularity, we’d expect more casinos to jump on it.

Disadvantages of Polygon Casinos

Many newish networks are trying to do similar things to Polygon. That includes Avalanche, Solana, BNB, and Polkadot. They can’t all win, and one or more will surely start to fall away as the competition increases.

Polygon is entwined with Ethereum

While Polygon has set out to address many of the flaws with Ethereum, Polygon essentially is only a scaling solution for Ethereum. If Ethereum loses market share, Polygon’s usefulness and value will decline.

Lack of casinos accepting MATIC

MATIC is not a popular coin at crypto casinos. There are very few casinos offering deposits and play using the token. And even fewer that we would recommend. This should change if the coin continues to prove popular, but it’s very much a wait-and-see scenario at this moment.
